Hodder Education: Rocket Phonics

Hodder Education has been an educational publisher in the UK for 150 years. They design and deliver pedagogically robust materials in print and digital. Part of Hachette UK, they provide pedagogically robust print and digital learning materials for ages 4-16+.

The Brief

Seedling was engaged to create interactive content for Hodder’s Rocket Phonics programme, which is part of their hugely popular Reading Planet series. Rocket Phonics is a story-based approach to phonics and provides an introduction to reading. It comprises a set of nine books with digital resources. Seedling was tasked with helping the Hodder team create the digital games aspect of the programme.
Reading Planet is used by approximately
125,000 pupils in over 1,000 schools in the UK.

Challenges

There were several challenges for this project around quality, quantity and time.

QUALITY

The quality of the book illustrations had to be emulated within the Seedling games.

QUANTITY

The sheer quantity of content output (200+ games) exceeded the allocated budget.

TIME

Initial games had to be market-ready, in line with the first book imprint, within 3 months.

Delivery

We styled eleven game templates specifically for Hodder, seamlessly integrating graphics from the books. The combined Hodder and Seedling team delivered a beautiful set of over 200 games on-time and on-budget. The exported HTML5 games are fast loading, even on slow school networks, they run on a web browser and are compatible with all major computers and tablet devices. The games are securely stored within the Seedling authoring platform and are available to the Hodder team 365/24/7 meaning their editors can add further content, questions or games any time.
Seedling has made a significant impact on how we provide interactive games within our programmes. They really have removed the technical challenges. Our editorial team now has instant control over all content, which makes producing large quantities of educational games really quick and easy.

Seedling Authoring Platform

The Hodder Education team was given editor access to the Seedling authoring platform. One of their team members set up 190 games in just over a month. From there, others in the editorial team could edit and adjust the games from within the platform without any assistance from Seedling.

The editorial team were able to share, review and approve the games over the course of the project without having to liaise with any other third party.

Once approved, the games were outputted as HTML5 packages and uploaded to the Hodder Education Boost Learning Management Platform by their in-house IT Support team. Seedling has continued to provide consultancy support to the IT and content teams who are benefiting from our wide experience delivering similar solutions around the globe.
